About Thailand

The kingdom of Thailand covering an area of 513,115 square kilometres, lies in the heart of Southeast Asia, making it a natural gateway to Indochina, Myanmar and Southern China. Its shape  and geography  divide  into four natural  regions  : the mountains  and forests  of the North; the vast rice fields of the Central Plains; the semi-arid  farm lands of the Northeast plateau;  and    the  tropical  islands  and  long  coastline  of  the  peninsula  South.  Thailand embraces  a rich diversity of cultures and traditions.  With its proud history, tropical climate and renowned hospitality, the Kingdom is a never-ending source of fascination and pleasure for  international  visitors.  Thailand  is  well  known  and  famous  in  ancient  unique  history, tradition,  and  culture.  Also,  Thai  people  are  very  friendly,  kindly,  and  smilingly  as  its reputation “The Land of Smile”.

Bangkok  is  the  capital  city  and  centre  of  political,  commercial,  industrial  and  cultural activities.  It  covers  an  area  of  more  than  1,500  square  kilometres,  and  it  is  home  to approximately  ten million  people  or more  than  10% of the country’s  population.  Bangkok offers visitors the opportunity to experience fascinating glimpse of Thailand’s gentle culture amidst  the bustle  of a great and dynamic  metropolis.  This great city has had astounding success in combining the ancient and modern world. It is also the seat of Thailand’s revered Royal Family, with His Majesty the King recognized  as Head of State, Head of the Armed Forces, Upholder of the Buddhist religion and Upholder of all religions.

Climate

Thailand enjoys a tropical climate with three distinct seasons-hot and dry from February to
May  (average  temperature  34 degrees  Celsius  and  75%  humidity);  rainy  with  plenty  of

sunshine from June to October (average day temperature 29 degrees Celsius and 87% humidity);  and  cool  from  November  to  January  (temperatures  range  from  32  degrees Celsius to below 20 degrees Celsius with a drop in humidity).

Bangkok   has  a  hot,  tropical  climate  with  daytime  temperature   reaching   the  mid-30s throughout the year. November to February is the driest time of year and the most popular with tourists. March, April and May are the hottest months, and the rainy season runs from June to October. During the wet season short showers are likely during the afternoon, though some days it will rain all day.

Time

The time in Thailand is seven hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (+7 hours GMT). Thailand does not observe daylight savings.

Electricity
The electric current is 220 volt AC (50 cycles) throughout the country. Many different types of plugs and sockets are in use. Visitors from the USA and those not on the 220/50 volt will have to bring adapters to run most other appliances. Hotels generally prepare converter plugs for guests to borrow.

Dress code

Light, loose cotton clothes are sensible and a jacket is required for formal meetings and dining in top restaurants. When visiting Buddhist temples, long pants are required.

Business hours

Government offices are generally open between 8.30 to 16.30 hrs with a noon to 13.00 hrs lunch break, Monday to Friday except on public holidays.

Many stores open seven days a week from 10.00 to 22.00 hrs.

Thai banks hours are generally open Mondays to Fridays from 8.30 to 15.30 hrs except on public holidays.

Currency and Currency exchange

The  Thai  unit  of  currency  is  the  baht,  1  baht  is  divided  into  100  satang.  Note  are  in denominations  of 1,000  (brown),  500 (purple),  100 (red), 50 (blue),  and 20 (green)  baht. Coins consist of 25 satang, 50 satang, 1 baht, 2 baht, 5 baht and 10 baht.

Major currency bills and travelers cheques are cashed easily at hotels, tourist shops, all provincial  banks,  shopping  centres  and  money  changers.  Travellers  cheques  are  best changed in banks (you will need your passport). Rates of exchange at banks or authorized money changers are better than those at hotels and department stores.

Visa  and  Master  Card  are  the  credit  cards  most  widely  accepted  followed  by  American
Express.

Tipping  is not a usual  practice  in Thailand  although  it is becoming  more  common.  Most hotels and restaurants add a 10% service charge onto the bill. Taxi drivers do not require a tip, but the gesture is appreciated and 10-20 baht is acceptable for porters.
